Calculate your BTEC UCAS tariff points with our free BTEC UCAS Points Calculator. Select your qualification size and grade below to get an instant, accurate total based on the latest UCAS tariff.
It converts your BTEC grades into UCAS tariff points and adds everything up for you. Pick your BTEC size, pick your grade, and the total appears. If you study a BTEC alongside A-Levels or an EPQ, add those in extra rows and the calculator combines the lot into one figure.
The reason a dedicated BTEC to UCAS points calculator matters is that BTEC grading trips people up. A Distinction* is not the same as a Distinction. A Merit converts to a C at A-Level, not a B. And the same grade is worth wildly different points depending on whether you hold an Extended Diploma, a Diploma or an Extended Certificate. Getting the size wrong is the single most common mistake, and it can throw your total off by more than 100 points. This tool removes that risk. You select the exact qualification you hold and the points come straight from the official UCAS tariff tables.
BTECs use four grades. Each one lines up with an A-Level grade on the UCAS tariff, though the pairing surprises many students. Merit maps to a C, not a B, and Pass maps to an E.

Before you use any BTEC grades to UCAS points calculator, check which size of BTEC National you hold. The name is on your certificate or your course paperwork. Two students with the same grades can have completely different totals if their qualifications are different sizes.
The same size as three A-Levels. Grades come as a triple, such as DDD or D*D*D*. Maximum 168 points, the same ceiling as A*A*A*.
The same size as two A-Levels. Grades come as a pair, such as DD or D*D*. Maximum 112 points.
Equivalent to one and a half A-Levels. A single grade. Maximum 84 points at D*.
The same size as one A-Level. A single grade. D* is worth 56 points, exactly matching an A* at A-Level.
Half the size of an A-Level. A single grade. Maximum 28 points at D*.
Check your enrolment letter or ask your tutor. The full title matters. A National Diploma and a Extended Diploma sound similar but carry different points.
Every grade and size on one page, with the A-Level equivalent shown alongside. These are the same values used by the calculator above.

📝 Studying a reformed BTEC from 2025? The new BTEC Nationals introduced in September 2025, sometimes called AAQs, carry exactly the same UCAS points as the versions above. Pearson has confirmed the values are unchanged, so the tables on this page apply to you too.
144
Triple Distinction at Extended Diploma. The same as AAA at A-Level, and enough for many Russell Group that accept BTEC entry.
168
The maximum a BTEC Extended Diploma can score. Identical to A*A*A* at A-Level.
128
Two Distinctions and a Merit at Extended Diploma. Matches ABB at A-Level, a common offer band at high-tariff universities.
112
One Distinction and two Merits at Extended Diploma. The same as BBC. One of the most common conditional offers made to BTEC applicants.
96
Triple Merit at Extended Diploma. Equivalent to CCC and meets the published requirement for a wide range of degree courses.
96
Double Distinction at the two A-Level sized Diploma. The same points as AA, usually held alongside another qualification.
Plenty of students hold a mixed profile, most often an Extended Certificate plus two A-Levels, or an Extended Diploma plus an EPQ. The tariff treats every qualification separately, so you simply add the points together. This is exactly what the rows in the calculator above do.
Extended Certificate at D (48) + A-Level grade B (40) + A-Level grade B (40) = 128 points. The same total as ABB.
Extended Diploma at DDM (128) + EPQ at grade B (20) = 148 points. The EPQ lifts this profile above the AAA threshold of 144.
One rule to watch: if you hold two BTECs where one is a smaller version of the other in the same subject, only the larger one counts. UCAS does not award points twice for overlapping content.
Yes, and the numbers back it up. This is the question BTEC students ask more than any other, and the honest answer is that a BTEC on its own is a well established route into a degree.
UK students accepted to university hold at least one BTEC
of UK universities accept BTEC students onto their courses
maximum BTEC points, equal to the A-Level maximum
The picture varies by course rather than by university. Vocational and applied degrees, such as business, health, sport, computing and engineering, regularly admit students with an Extended Diploma alone. The most selective courses, particularly medicine and some sciences at Russell Group universities, often ask for an A-Level in a specific subject alongside a BTEC, or set grade requirements within individual BTEC units. Check the entry requirements page for each course rather than assuming, because two universities offering the same degree can treat BTEC applicants quite differently.
These bands give a rough sense of where different totals typically land. Individual courses set their own requirements, so treat this as orientation rather than a promise.
PPP to MMM.
Foundation years and lower-tariff courses
MMM to DMM. A wide range of degree courses
DMM to DDM. Competitive courses at many universities
DDM to DDD. High-tariff and some Russell Group courses
DDD and above. The most competitive BTEC-accepting courses
Business is the most studied BTEC subject in England, so it is worth saying plainly: there is no separate btec business level 3 ucas points calculator because subject makes no difference to the tariff. A DDM in Business is worth 128 points. So is a DDM in Sport, Health and Social Care, IT or Engineering. What changes your points is the size of the qualification and the grade, never the subject on the certificate.
Where subject does matter is entry requirements. A business degree may happily accept BTEC Business as full preparation, while an engineering course might ask for A-Level Maths alongside a BTEC in Engineering. Work out your points with the calculator above, then check what each course asks for beyond the number.
Three generations of BTEC Nationals are in circulation, and all of them carry UCAS points. If you finished college recently you almost certainly hold an RQF BTEC, taught from 2016 onwards. If you studied earlier, perhaps as a mature applicant returning to education, yours may be the older QCF version. Those still count. UCAS keeps tariff tables for older qualifications, and universities accept them, though the points values differ slightly from the current tables on this page.
From September 2025 the newest generation, known as AAQs, began teaching. Their points match the RQF values exactly, so students on the reformed courses can use this page and the ucas tariff points calculator btec students rely on above without any adjustment. If you are unsure which version you hold, the qualification number on your certificate settles it, or your college can tell you in a minute.
Between 48 points at PPP and 168 points at DDD*, depending on your grades. DDD sits at 144, the same as AAA at A-Level.
In UCAS points, yes. Both are worth 144. Some selective courses still prefer A-Levels for subject-specific preparation, so check requirements for anything highly competitive.
It depends on the size of your BTEC. At Extended Certificate a Merit is 32 points, the same as a C at A-Level. At Extended Diploma, MMM totals 96 points.
Yes. Each qualification carries its own points and you add them together. An Extended Certificate at D plus two A-Levels at B gives 128 points in total.
More than 90% of UK universities do, and around one in three students accepted to university holds at least one BTEC. Acceptance varies more by course than by institution, so always read the entry requirements for your specific degree.

Yes. Every value comes from the official UCAS tariff and is reviewed by Kate Barlow, a qualified admissions adviser, before each application cycle.
Yes. Qualifications completed before the 2016 reform remain valid and carry points, though the values differ slightly from current tables. Universities accept them, which matters for mature applicants returning to education.
No. GCSEs are Level 2 qualifications and carry no tariff points. Universities may still ask for GCSE English and Maths at grade 4 or above as a separate condition.
